The reason why people find overheard mobile phone conversations so annoying has been solved by scientists. Причина, по которой людей раздражают разговоры по мобильному телефону, была найдена учеными.

Researchers discovered that it takes more effort for the brain to understand only half a conversation or a “halfalogue” compared with a full dialogue between two people. Исследования показали, что это требует больше усилий для работы мозга, чтобы понять только половину разговора или “полсмысла”, в сопоставлении с полным диалогом между людьми.
Scientists at Cornell University, New York, found that people could not predict what the person talking into the mobile would say next – because they had not heard the last words from the person on the other end of the phone. Ученые Корнельского университета в Нью-Йорке выяснили, что люди не могут предсказать, что человек, говорящий по мобильному телефону, скажет дальше, потому что они не слышали последних слов от человека на другом конце телефона.
The brain has to work twice as hard to understand the conversation and fill in the blanks, requiring more attention and making it harder to shut out. Мозг должен работать в два раза интенсивнее, чтобы понять разговор и заполнить пустоты, что требует больше внимания и становится труднее не думать о разговоре.
twice – two times more, bigger, better etc than something else
twice as many/much (as something): They employ 90 people, twice as many as last year.
fill in (phrasal verb) – to write all the necessary information on an official document, form etc (заполнить документ):
Don’t forget to fill in your boarding cards.
shut something ↔ out (phrasal verb) to stop yourself from thinking about or noticing something, so that you are not affected by it (не допускать, отогнать мысли):
Jenny closed her eyes and tried to shut everything out.
The conclusions in the study, published in the journal Psychological Science, show why many of us find it annoying overhearing people talking loudly on their mobile phone in the office, on a train or in a car. Результаты исследования, опубликованные в журнале Психологическая наука, объясняют, почему большинство из нас считают надоедливым громкие разговоры по мобильному телефону в офисе, поезде, машине.
“It’s unbelievably irritating to overhear someone on a cell phone,” said Lauren Emberson, the study co-author. “Это невероятно раздражает, когда подслушиваешь чей-то разговор по мобильному телефону”-сказала Лаурен Эмберсон, соавтор исследования.
“It’s harder to tune out, you can’t pull your attention away from it and you’re more distracted by it.” Довольно непросто отвлечься, никак не получается перестать обращать внимания и это еще сильнее отвлекает.
tune out (phrasal verb) – to ignore or stop listening to someone or something:
I learned to tune out the background noise.
distract – to take someone’s attention away from something by making them look at or listen to something else:
Try not to distract the other students.
We have less control to move away our attention from half a conversation (or halfalogue) than when listening to a dialogue.” Нам менее подвластно отключение нашего внимания от половины разговора (или половины смысла), по сравнению с тем, когда мы слушаем диалог”.
The postgraduate psychology student added: “Since halfalogues really are more distracting and you can’t tune them out, this could explain why people are irritated.” Аспирант психологического факультета добавил: “Если односторонние диалоги такие отвлекающие и ты не можешь не обращать на них внимания, то становится понятным, почему люди такие раздраженные.”
When you hear half of a conversation, you get less information and you can’t predict as well. It requires more attention. Когда мы слышим половину разговора, мы получаем меньше информации и мы не можем предположить что это. Требуется больше внимания.
She said when people try to eavesdrop they try and make sense of snippets of conversation and predict what speakers will say next. Она сказала что, когда люди пытаются подслушать, они прилагают усилия и понимают смысл разговора по его обрывкам, а также предполагают, что рассказчик скажет дальше.
eavesdrop [‘iːvzdrɔp] – to deliberately listen secretly to other people’s conversations
There was Helena eavesdropping outside the door.
snippet – a small piece of news, information, or conversation
The findings were based on research involving 41 college students who did concentration exercises including tracking moving dots, while hearing one or both parties during a mobile phone conversation. В исследовании принимали участие 41 студент колледжа. Они должны были выполнить упражнение на концентрацию внимания: следить за движущимися точками, и одновременно слушать разговор по сотовому телефону с одной или сразу с двух сторон.

Persevere [pɜ:sɪ’vɪə] – стойко, упорно продолжать.

The students made more errors when they heard one speaker’s side of the conversation than when they overheard the entire dialogue.
The study shows that overhearing a mobile phone conversation affects the attention we use in our daily tasks, including driving, she added.
“These results suggest that a driver’s attention can be impaired by a passenger’s mobile phone conversation,” she added.

impair [ɪm’pɛə] – to damage something or make it not as good as it should be (ухудшать):
The illness had impaired his ability to think and concentrate.

There are about 4.6 billion global mobile subscribers, according to the International Telecommunications Union, a U.N. agency, which is the equivalent to about two-thirds of the world’s population.
The study recommended similar studies should be conducted with driving simulators.

  1. I do think that articls like this are helpfull for learning English. Thanks a lot!
    But I noticed couple mistakes:
“Why overhearing mobile phone conversations is so annoying”. – There is plural in this sentence. So, there must be “are”, not “is”.
I’ve found similar mistakes in other articles.
    Is it informal speech?
    Answer please.

    • “Why overhearing mobile phone conversations is so annoying”. – There is plural in this sentence. So, there must be “are”, not “is”.

“is” refers to “overhearing”, but not to “conversations”

  2. Though, in the paragraph “Мозг должен работать в два раза интенсивнее, чтобы понять разговор и заполнить пустоты….” I would have used the word “пробелы” instead of “пустоты”. and the next one “считают надоедливым громкие разговоры …” “надоедливыми”, but it is irrelevant.. Good job!
